Discovering and Protecting Earth’s Oceans...
...is an education program being created by Oceans Alert initially for 5th grade students in New York City, New York. The mission of Discovering and Protecting Earth’s Oceans is to teach students the wonders of the oceans, its animals, plants, and ecosystems, as well as instill values of responsibility and stewardship for our oceans and waterways. It is Oceans Alert’s objective to achieve this mission by creating an environmental ocean curriculum for 5th grade students and effectively training teachers to implement it.
Even though water bodies surround New York City, many young people have zero ocean literacy. They seriously lack any connection to the ocean that so influences their lives.
This is true for students all over the nation, unfortunately, not just in inner cities. Discovering and Protecting Earth’s Ocean will not only allow students to learn about this 70% of our world rarely thought about, but also will give them hands on experience with the many wonders of the ocean and its ecosystems.
This project will also include an environmental action component. This will be a coordinated effort by thousands of students, teachers and community members to make a difference for our ocean habitats and inhabitants.
Many school districts across the U.S. lack the funding, the staff, the expertise, and the time to develop the programs to meet curriculum standards, especially in environmental education.
Oceans Alert can help fill this void, benefiting not only NYC school students, but possibly also benefitting school districts and students across the U.S.
"Discovering and Protecting Earth's Ocean" will supply lesson plans, backup, and activities needed to effectively teach ocean literacy to 5th graders in New York City. This will ensure that no students are deprived of this integral education because their school could not afford to develop and implement the programs.
This project is of the utmost importance. In order to save the ocean and its ecosystems, we must educate our young people about the wonders of the ocean along with the multitude of problems it faces. Most importantly, we must empower them to know they can make a difference.
Oceans Alert has submitted grant proposals and is seeking donations to help fund this project. These schools have no curriculum content or backup. Every dollar you give will go towards increasing ocean literacy in the biggest school system in the nation. Your contribution will do so much for the schools, their teachers and their students.
